DOUGLAS FIRĀ 
PSEUDOTSUGA MENZIES

Popular both as an ornamental and Christmas tree, strong aroma & good needle retention Prefers well-drained soil & intolerant of clay, requires heavy shearing for best form 1-1.5" blue/green, soft needles, very fast growth rate, will reach 150' and can live 1000 years

BALSAM FIR

Prized Christmas tree with distinctive fragrance, stong branches, & good needle retention Prefers moist, well-drained, acidic loams but is susceptible to early frost damage .75-1.5" dark green, soft needles, grows to 75' with 20' spread, moderate growth rate

CANAAN FIR
ABIES BALSAMEA VAR PHANEROLEPIS

Very similar to Balsam Fir, increasingly popular as cut Christmas tree Prefers well-drained loams but will tolerate more moisture than Balsam, late bud-break .5-1.25" dark green, soft needles, naturally dense form, grows to 50' with 20' spread

Common ornamental & windbreak tree, largest Pine in U.S., very fast growth rate Will tolerate marginal soil conditions, poor results & color in clay, susceptible to deer damage 2-5" blue/green, slender needles, grows to 120' with 30' spread, irregular at maturity
